Dogs are pretty good at sensing danger. Along with their acute hearing, their powerful sense of smell helps them detect chemicals in the air. This is why we use police dogs to sniff out bombs and illegal drugs, but police and military dogs aren’t the only ones who can play hero, pet dogs can also do their own bit of heroism at home.

One perfect example is Sadie, the senior pit bull. She was described as obedient and well-behaved by her dog mom, Serena Costello. So when she received word that her fur baby went outside the house and wandered onto the streets, she was shocked and upset with her.

In February 2019, Serena’s neighbors saw the 11-year-old pup roaming around. They immediately called the Tuckahoe Police Department to get help in recovering the pooch. When the police officers arrived, they noticed that Sadie was a bit evasive, and it seemed like she was trying to lead them somewhere.

Sadie led the cops to their home, and once they got there, the officers noticed that the sliding door was open. They also noticed that there were scratch marks at the edge of the door. It suggested that the dog struggled to get out of the house. But what could be the reason for this?

They stepped into the empty house, and that’s when they got a whiff of gas in the air; it was coming from the basement. When the gas leak happened, Serena was at her job, her daughter was at daycare, and Sadie was left at home alone. The officers called the gas company to fix the leak on Serena’s behalf. Her neighbors called her to let her know about the incident.

Serena shared that she was upset at first as Sadie has never left their home without permission. But once she learned the reason why the disappointment turned into admiration. She was very grateful for Sadie’s quick thinking. If it wasn’t for her pet dog, that day could’ve been a lot worse.
