If there is one thing that all dogs dread, it’s fireworks. Because of a dog’s heightened sense of hearing, even a firecracker that crackles several miles away will frighten them.

That is why year after year, hundreds, if not thousands of dogs run away from their homes during holidays that involve a lot of fireworks such as the 4th of July in the US, or Christmas and New Year. The sound of fireworks will confuse and frighten even a highly trained dog.

Thankfully, rescues such as that of Hope For Paws help save dogs that have run away from home because of firecrackers. But what about dogs who are in shelters? Who helps comfort them?

Fortunately, inmates from the Brevard County Jail have stepped up to comfort the helpless shelter dogs of the Brevard County Animal Care Center. During the festivities, the inmates spend time with the dogs at the shelter to help them relax and ease their fears by reading to them, playing with them, and feeding them. In return, the inmates get the dogs’ unconditional love and attention.

According to the sheriff’s office, they are not only hoping for the inmates to keep the dogs calm during the festivities, but they are also hoping that the inmates, by taking care of the dogs, will find a purpose to their lives. Once they complete their jail sentence, it will be easier for them to transition to a normal life once they find a purpose.

The idea of having the inmates care for shelter dogs during such occasions is something that the citizens came up with. As it turns out, it is already the second year that the sheriff’s office and the Animal Care Center has allowed the inmates to take care of the dogs, and so far, it has been a success.
