The Montez family, who used to live in Boyd, Texas, adopted their terrier mix Corky more than ten years ago from the Humane Society of North Texas. They had come looking for a pet, and their children instantly gravitated toward Corky.

The family loved the canine, so they made sure he was safe and secure in their home. Despite these precautions, however, Corky escaped from their fenced backyard around four months after his arrival.

Since the terrier mix had a collar and a microchip, the Montezes had faith that they would find the dog soon. They posted flyers, went door to door in their neighborhood, and even visited local businesses to ask if they had spotted Corky.

Six months passed, the Montezes still had no news about the terrier mix, and that’s when they slowly lost hope that they would ever find him. They eventually moved to Fort Worth and had to accept that Corky was gone for good.

Nearly seven years later, the Montezes were working on their yard when the phone rang. Kimberly, the mom, went inside to see what the matter was—and the voicemail she got astonished her.

She rushed back outside and told her husband, Jimmy, that the Humane Society of North Texas had Corky with them. The family couldn’t believe the news and had to see for themselves.

Kimberly, Jimmy, and their four children shed tears of happiness when they saw that it was, indeed, Corky. He was almost seven years older and looked exhausted, but it was the same terrier mix they adopted long ago.

According to the shelter staff, an individual had found Corky together with two dogs by the side of a busy road in Fort Worth. One was already dead, the victim of a vehicular accident, but Corky and his other pal, who’s also a terrier, were okay.

The Humane Society named Corky’s friend Captain for Captain Hook because he only had one eye. Nobody knows how long Corky and his canine buddies were together, but one thing was for sure—Corky and Captain had a tight bond.

Hence, the Montez family chose to adopt Captain, too. Their household has grown bigger with four dogs and four children, but Kimberly and Jimmy wouldn’t change a thing.
