A rescue dog named Huck has a million reasons to smile now after enduring months of suffering.

Once upon a time, the pit bull mix was one of 80 neglected canines that the Santa Rosa County Animal Services rescued. Sadly, the facility was at full capacity when the pack of dogs came to their front steps. To ensure that all of them would have a fighting chance to land loving homes, the BISSELL Pet Foundation organized a statewide emergency relief effort.

They hosted an event called “Empty the Shelters” last February that aimed to empty shelters at full capacity. They also covered the adoption fees for eleven shelter pets at the event and matched 290 pets with potential homes.

They encouraged several vacant animal shelters from all over Florida to open their doors to adoptable pets. Thankfully, many facilities heeded their call and took in at least five furry friends from the Santa Rosa County Animal Services.

Huck was among them, who got transferred to Citrus County Animal Services. After being rescued, he exhibited trauma and was scared of the world. His difficult past made it hard for him to walk and stand upright, and he opted to crawl around his leash instead.

Colleen M. Yarbrough, animal services director at Citrus County Animal Services, shared that Huck was very shut down and fearful upon arriving at the shelter. She inferred that it might result from the improper care he received. Still, Huck seemed very grateful to his rescuers, knowing they were there to help him.

Within a few days of dedicated care at the facility, Huck showcased his lovable personality. Yarbrough said it was delightful to watch the canine bloom out of his shell, making way for his sweet, loving character to shine. Eventually, this side of him won over the heart of an interested future pet parent.

Pamela Rice, Huck’s adopter, shared how she crossed paths with the beloved canine. Before checking out the dogs, she whispered a prayer and wished that if there were a canine at the event meant for her, she would gladly take him in. And it was as if the heavens were looking down on her favor! During her visit, Huck followed her around the store, and Rice knew he was the one.

We’re happy to announce that Huck now lives with Rice, her other dog Beau and a cat named Underfoot. The newly adopted canine likes spending his days relaxing and showering everyone with kisses. Rice says she feels blessed ever since Huck came into their lives.

In a statement, Yarbrough says she is hopeful that Huck’s story helps other people realize that animal welfare is a community-wide issue that needs the cooperation of different people and agencies. She also said that Huck is an example of a canine who proves that shelter pets have so much love to give, and would make a delightful addition to any family. Yarbrough says they are honored to be part of his story and hopes that others will be more open in selecting the new members of their family.

We’re happy for you, Huck! Keep smiling!
