Stray animals walking the streets of Greece are a regular sight.

One fateful day in November 2014 in Greece, a Facebook post about a dog that resembled a walking zombie from a horror film was shared by an animal rescue volunteer. The poor puppy could barely walk and appeared to be on the verge of death. The dog’s hair was nearly completely gone, and his bones protruded from his body.

Rescuer Valia Orfanidou said that people who saw the dog’s photo thought it was phony. Some even thought it was a screenshot from a video game, but it wasn’t.

The dog was rescued from the streets after a 40-mile journey by two animal rescuers from the Ilioupolis Animal Welfare Union. When the dog, eventually named Billy, came to the clinic, he was terrified, couldn’t walk, and was severely malnourished.

Billy was not expected to live to tell the tale, according to the rescuers. He couldn’t walk because he was so frail, and Valia remembered how terrified they were when they first saw the sick animal.

Billy was rescued by Valia and her team so that he may have a nice place to die in. Many people expected the veterinarian to recommend euthanasia to stop Billy’s misery, but he did not.

Surprisingly, Billy’s vital signs remained constant, and despite his state, he appeared to be recovering from all of his ailments. The veterinarians offered the dog a chance to recuperate from his mental and physical stress.

Valia provided the dog with a comfortable home in which he could spend the rest of his days. Billy was confined to a small room in Valia’s house for the first few days of his rehabilitation.

Billy didn’t move much and didn’t make a sound. He appeared to be in need of some alone time, so Valia left him and let him relax on his own.

The dog regained his strength after ten days and gradually started taking small walks.

Billy was soon adopted by a woman from Switzerland after a few months of recovery.
